    Tongan Barbarian Rugby

    TBR has been the visual side of the Trust. A yearly TBR sevens team plays in the World Schools Sevens Tournament, in Auckland, NZ. The TBR programme over the years has become a rich programme that integrates a week long development camp which includes, team-building, leadership, culture and rugby.

    Mentorships

    The mentoring programmes vary from  formal to informal relationship building, which aims to build the skills, awareness and development  through the input and/or assistance of professionals who have the experience and knowledge to help.

    We work to empower Tongans and Pacific Islanders in NZ to achieve at their highest potential in sport and vocational fields.

    2017 TBR player Tovo Faleafa and 2018 TBR squad member Tupou Vaai selected to NZ U20 in 2018. Tupou Vaai became All Black No. 1188 in 2020.

    What programmes we offer

    From the Tongan Barbarian Rugby team that plays in the annual World School's Sevens to the NZ Diploma in Sport, Recreation & Exercise.

    NZ Diploma in Sport, Recreation & Exercise (Level 5)

    The NZ Diploma in Sport, Recreation and Exercise with the Malakai Alatini Trust will immerse students in a practical hands on programme which combines academic study and sport specific industry experience in schools and clubs. Students will be interns, actively participating in activities from delivering sport skills at clubs and schools. Through the year students will have practical learning experience while they complete the Diploma which will enable the students to pursue careers as school sports coordinator, recreation programmer, sport specific coach, coaching coordinator, sport administrator, event manager, personal trainer, or continue to a Bachelor in Applied Sport and Exercise Science.

    Rugby and culture connecting players to new opportunities

    MIT School of Sport is partnering with Malakai Alatini Trust to deliver an intake of NZ Diploma of Sport, Recreation and Exercise grounded in rugby and culture.
    It allows students to develop their skills in a culturally supportive environment, as well as gaining experience working in industry.

    The diploma creates opportunities for developing the next generation of players on and off the field.
